SEO in the age of LLMs: useful content for search and AI answers
Search rankings and AI answers are different discovery paths. Build clear, verifiable content without treating citations or traffic as guaranteed outcomes.

Search is splitting in two
Visitors can discover a business through search results or AI-generated answers. These experiences overlap, but being mentioned in an answer is not equivalent to holding a search position. Both paths deserve useful content and careful measurement, without assuming every mention produces a visit.
What LLMs cite
These practices make information easier to understand and verify. They are editorial foundations, not a proven formula for obtaining AI citations.
- 01Clear entity signals: who you are, what you do, where — consistent across the site
- 02Structured content: descriptive headings, short answer-first paragraphs, lists
- 03Verifiable proof: numbers, named clients and cases a model can cross-check
- 04Accurate structured data that describes the visible content; no special AI file guarantees inclusion
Classic SEO is the foundation, not the competitor
Keep crawlability, useful internal links and content that answers the visitor's question as your foundation. Google's AI search guidance builds on existing SEO practices, but different AI providers select sources differently. Good conventional SEO should not be presented as a guarantee of visibility in every model.
Write answers that stand up without the surrounding pitch
A useful section answers a specific question in its first paragraph, then explains limitations, evidence and the next decision. Descriptive headings help readers find the relevant passage. They also make the structure easier for search systems to interpret, but formatting alone does not make an unsupported statement trustworthy.
When discussing a client project, separate the company description from your own contribution and any measured outcome. Use only results you can substantiate and share. If an example is hypothetical, label it clearly. A precise explanation of the work is more valuable than a dramatic performance number that a reader cannot verify.
Keep entity information consistent
Make the author, service scope and contact path easy to identify. Connect articles to the relevant service and to genuine project evidence. Use the same professional identity across the site and public profiles, while avoiding invented awards, locations or endorsements. Structured data should describe the visible page, not add claims absent from it.
For a bilingual site, translated content needs more than a language toggle if both languages are intended to be independently discovered. Distinct crawlable language URLs and correctly implemented language annotations are a separate technical project. A translated browser view is useful for visitors, but does not by itself establish separate Swedish search visibility.
Measure Google traffic and AI referrals separately
Use Search Console to monitor indexed pages, impressions, clicks and the queries that surface your content. Compare those signals with qualified enquiries rather than treating impressions as business impact. Check whether new traffic reaches the relevant service page and whether visitors find a credible next step.
AI referrals and mentions are harder to measure consistently. Referral information may be incomplete, and a manual check of an AI answer is only a snapshot. Record observations without presenting them as a stable ranking report. Do not claim that a content change caused an AI citation unless you have evidence that supports that conclusion.
What not to promise
Google's guidance says its AI search features do not require special AI markup or a new machine-readable file. An llms.txt file can offer a concise site summary, but should not be sold as a guaranteed route to inclusion in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google answers. Providers make their own selection decisions and those behaviours can change.
Treat useful content, accessible pages and verifiable expertise as durable work, not a trick for perfect visibility. This journal connects practical guidance to my actual service areas. The next step is to maintain those answers, add evidence when it becomes available and review which questions bring relevant visitors, without promising traffic or citations.
